“Mmm, mmm, chomp~”
“Aha~ Truly delicious.”
“Hey, hey, weren't you supposed to be here to help?”
Karl looked at Furni, who was sitting on the desk swinging her legs with a piece of cake in hand. He couldn't help but feel a sudden wave of exhaustion wash over him as he clutched a massive stack of letters. To make matters worse, this dragon was even casually puffing out dragon flames for fun.
“Tomorrow is my last day on the job, Furni.”
“Mm-hmm, bye-bye~”
Furni popped the remaining half of the cake into her mouth and rolled over on the cleared desk. She even gave Karl a lazy wave of her hand.
“Have you decided what you'll do next?”
“Who knows? I'll have to survive first before I can think about that.”
Karl placed another neatly organized stack of letters in front of Furni.
“Wow, these are just filled with mockery aimed at you.”
Spurred by curiosity, Furni sat up on the desk and picked up the letters. Upon seeing the disgusting words penned by the nobles, she immediately spat out a puff of scorching dragon flame.
“Ah, after all this time, these nobles are still the exact same.”
“Tell me about it. Let's just hope that Hero realizes it soon.”
Placing the final stack of letters before Furni, Karl finally found the time to sit down and pour himself a cup of tea.
“I want a cup too~”
“Pour it yourself.”
“Eh~ Karl, are you really unwilling to serve the great guardian dragon now~”
Furni's tail swept across the desk. Finding no tea set out for her, she thumped her tail against the wood in dissatisfaction.
Knock, knock—
“Bishop Karl, may I come in?”
A sister's voice came from the other side of the door along with a gentle knock.
“Of course.”
Karl walked over and opened the door to welcome the sister inside.
“Also, you don't need to call me bishop anymore. Right now, Karl is just an ordinary citizen in need of the Holy See's help.”
Karl poured a cup of tea from his private stash for the entering sister. He looked at her with a warm, gentle expression.
“Um, we will try.”
“Mm-hmm, I believe everyone can do it. But remember, everyone needs to pay more attention to the actual common folk.”
As he handed her the cup, the tea's surface reflected the deep reluctance in the sister's eyes—she was clearly loath to see this soon-to-be-stripped-of-power bishop leave. As one of the few bishops in the Holy See who actually cared about ordinary sisters like them, if they had a choice, she and most of the priests would never want this bishop to go.
“Hey, hey, there's still someone else here, Bishop Karl~”
Seeing the two of them enjoying their tea while she was left out, Furni was highly displeased. Spotting Bishop Furni in the room, the sister suddenly remembered something.
“Bishop Furni is here too! Perfect, I have a letter here for you.”
“For me? A background letter-processing machine like me actually has a letter of her own?”
“Since it's a letter from the royal family, I didn't open it.”
“No worries, no worries.”
Seeing the sister pull out a sealed letter, Furni used her wind magic to pull it straight into her hand.
“Mm-hmm, let's see...”
“Bishop Furni, mm-hmm, thank you for your service to the Holy See... Your close association with Bishop Karl has greatly displeased the Sun of the Empire, so the Holy See thanks you for your service thus far?”
“Huh?”
Furni stared at the letter, her face a mask of pure disbelief. She hurriedly re-read the contents of the letter. Yet no matter how many times she looked, it still said they thanked Bishop Furni for her service.
“So, I'm also one of the bishops being relieved of duty?”
The letter fluttered to the floor as Furni began to tremble uncontrollably.
“The... The Holy See isn't going to keep me around anymore??”
“Haha, looks like some people can't accept being dismissed as easily as I can.”
“Hey! I didn't even do anything!”
Hearing Karl gloat from the side, Furni's sorrow instantly found an outlet. A blue blur pounced straight onto Karl's head.
“Chomp!”
“Hey, my hair! I worked so hard to maintain this hair! Let go! Let go of me!”
Seeing that the two soon-to-be-dismissed bishops were still so full of energy, the sister downed the rest of her tea.
“Seeing that you both are still so energetic puts my mind at ease.”
“The Holy See's doors will always be open to you both. If you ever need anything, you can come to the Holy See and find any one of us sisters. Everyone will be more than happy to help you.”
Standing at the doorway, the sister watched the bickering duo one last time before gently closing the door behind her.
“Let go! Let go of me!”
Karl groped blindly at his head, grabbed the dragon biting his hair, and flung her hard toward the room's wall.
Bang!
Several massive cracks instantly spiderwebbed across the wall. Staring at the cracks in the wall, Furni, who was sprawled on the floor, suddenly let out a sly grin.
“Ehehehehe~”
“Hey, you didn't get knocked stupid from that fall, did you?”
Seeing Furni giggling like an idiot on the floor, Karl looked at his hands in panic. Did he really just break the dragon's brain?
But then, Furni spun around to face Karl, still crouching on the floor.
“Ehehehehe~”
“Karl~ I just thought of something absolutely brilliant.”
Furni pointed at the cracks in the wall, then looked back at Karl.
“You mean...?”
“Well~ from now on, that guy Keith will be the one approving funds as Emperor, so...”
“Ehehehehe~” * 2
Karl watched Furni's gestures and instantly understood what his fellow dismissed bishop was getting at.
“Alright, let's do this!”
Karl immediately stripped off his bulky bishop robes, revealing a thin inner tunic that did absolutely nothing to hide his remarkably robust, muscular build. Karl clenched his fists and nodded at Furni. Instantly catching his drift, Furni extended her thick tail toward him. At the same time, she channeled her magic, and a pair of hard dragon horns materialized on her head, gleaming brightly as the sunlight from the window caught them.
“Ahahahahaha!”
“This is great!”
A series of violent, heavy crashing sounds began to echo from inside the room. The noise was so intense that the sister waiting outside found her headscarf completely drenched in sweat.
“What are those two doing in there?”
Just as she was wondering, the door she was leaning against shook violently from a massive impact, and a pair of horn-like objects suddenly punched straight through the wood. As soon as the horns retracted, voices drifted out from the newly made hole in the door.
“Ahahahahaha, how satisfying! I haven't felt this great in ages!”
“Exactly! Ugh, a bit dizzy... pfft, hahahaha!”
The sister listened to the mad laughter and peeked through the hole, only to see a blue head flying straight toward her face. And then, her vision went black.
Thud—
Vaguely, she could hear someone speaking.
“Quick, drag her in.”
“Keep going, keep going!”
