“Mutant beast tide?” Irene frowned slightly, repeating the term Arthas had used with a hint of confusion.
For some reason, hearing the word “mutation” triggered a vague sense of familiarity in her mind, as if she had once caught a fleeting glimpse of records regarding it in her Draconic Inheritance.
However, the information on this subject was scarce and fragmented. Moreover, Irene had previously deemed it too obscure to be of any use in improving her strength, so she hadn't paid much attention to it.
After undergoing her dream regression, her mind was crammed with a massive influx of memory fragments from her past life. Hearing the term so suddenly now, she actually couldn't recall what it was for a moment.
Just as Irene was about to search through her Draconic Inheritance, Arthas withdrew his gaze. The soul fire flickering beneath his helmet locked onto Irene as he explained, “These things emerged from underground two years ago, after a collapse occurred in a cross-river tunnel excavated by the Dwarven Empire...”
He was only halfway through his sentence when the ground suddenly began to vibrate slightly. Immediately after, a series of deafening, thunderous rumbles echoed from beyond the towering city walls.
It sounded like the blasts of alchemical bombs or explosive magic.
At that moment, Irene's eyes flashed, her expression turning equally solemn. Having searched her Draconic Inheritance, she finally remembered what on earth those things were.
She couldn't help but mutter subconsciously, “Weren't those things sealed away in the Southern Continent long ago? How did they end up in the Eastern Continent?”
Before Arthas could explain, Irene made a mental move, consuming a sliver of the power of faith that was slowly growing within her.
The next second, the dragoness and the undead who had been standing under the streetlight vanished from the spot.
Meanwhile, Kailolo, who had just run back to the staff dormitory of the World Daily, stopped in her tracks upon hearing the bells. She turned her head toward the city wall where the sound was coming from, thinking to herself, “Are those terrifying things back again?”
As if triggered by some horrific memory, a trace of fear appeared on Kailolo's small face. But in the next second, she shook her head like a rattle, muttering to herself with a resolute expression, “Lord Arthas will definitely defeat them all!”
Then, she took off again, running toward her dormitory building at an even faster pace than before.
Kailolo knew very well that she had to protect herself at a time like this. She absolutely could not cause trouble for Lord Arthas and the Black Knights!
“Dong!”
The second bell tolled, accompanied by the thunderous explosions.
The pedestrians on the city streets had already sprung into action upon hearing the first toll. By now, they had all run into their respective homes. After deftly locking their doors and closing their windows, they made sure to block them completely with heavy objects. Then, together with their families, they pulled out their Holy Scriptures of Redemption and began to chant in hushed voices.
However, their eyes would drift from time to time toward the direction of the tolling bells and explosions, betraying the turmoil in their hearts.
“Dong!”
The third bell tolled.
Amid orderly and heavy footsteps, squads of Black Knights wearing power armor, carrying chainswords on their backs, and wielding bolters ascended the city walls at extreme speed. They quickly found their defensive positions, loaded their bolters, and locked their gazes onto the far horizon through their power armor helmets.
In the distance, various pre-planted alchemical bombs exploded from time to time, sending bursts of fire into the sky. Amid the roar of the flames, a massive, tide-like wave of monsters was illuminated, surging forward like a tsunami.
From such a distance, these monsters looked like a dense swarm of ants. A single alchemical bomb blast would often clear out a massive empty zone, but it would immediately be filled by the subsequent waves of monsters.
They advanced at an extremely rapid pace. Seeing that the beast tide was about to reach the foot of the city wall, some of the more impatient Black Knights even reached for the cold, gleaming chainswords on their backs.
Although they had set up a large number of traps outside the city, these Black Knights knew better than anyone that relying solely on those traps was highly unlikely to stop these monsters.
Once these creatures broke through the suppressing fire and scaled the walls, they would have to draw their chainswords and engage in a bloody, close-quarters melee against monsters that feared no death.
Yet, as the Black Knights stood tense, ready at any moment to pull their triggers and unleash rounds inscribed with fire-explosion runes once the beast tide entered their range, they failed to notice that two figures had appeared at the very peak of the city wall, atop the stone pillar where the massive black bell hung.
