She was crazy.
This woman was absolutely insane!
Director-General Shen, what the hell are you doing?!
Bai Xiaodu quickly snatched the phone from her hand.
An ultra-high-quality, stable, long-term client like Xin Hai'an, who had high Affection for him and was willing to spend money, was extremely rare. In today's terrible market, you couldn't find another one even if you searched with a lantern!
Sure enough, having heard the coughing sound from Bai Xiaodu's end, Xin Hai'an furrowed her brows, her tone filled with suspicion. As a Ranger, her intuition had always been sharp. Moreover, that sound seemed to have been made by a young woman of a similar age to her!
Considering how popular Bai Xiaodu's face was, this instantly pushed her vigilance to the absolute maximum!
“Is there someone else with you?”
Seeing the situation, Bai Xiaodu responded immediately. He absolutely could not afford to be wishy-washy about this. Since she was suspicious, he had to extinguish that tiny spark of doubt before it could grow!
“Yes, there is. She's an older sister from the Explorers Association. To look out for each other and prevent any accidents, we formed a temporary three-person team: two guys and one girl.”
Bai Xiaodu quickly added the key point.
“Actually, I'm just a temporary addition. That older sister and the other male member are actually a couple.”
This sentence was the ultimate reassuring anchor!
So that's how it is.
Holding the phone in her right hand, the suspicion between Xin Hai'an's brows eased slightly.
Since he was in a team with a couple, she probably didn't need to worry too much about him being sweet-talked away by someone else. The inexplicable unease in her heart vanished. But then she suddenly realized...
She seemed to have overreacted.
At least on the surface, they were still just ordinary friends. Even though her older sister had been constantly egging her on to find an opportunity to quickly have some fun, Xin Hai'an had always brushed it off with vague, noncommittal responses.
Her views on romance aligned with the traditional concepts of the vampire race, which solemnly referred to a female vampire's loss of virginity as the First Embrace. If the non-vampire partner accepted it, they would receive certain talent-related benefits. For example, increased recovery capabilities and resistance to dark magic.
There was even a special effect that would establish an indescribable, wondrous resonance between their souls, allowing them to feel each other's joys and sorrows. If one met a good partner, it was naturally wonderful; but if they met the wrong person, it could even affect their future path of cultivation. Therefore, no matter how wild a vampire lived, they usually took their First Embrace very seriously.
Xin Hai'an pondered for a moment before replying in a lukewarm tone.
“Mm.”
She finally believed me!
Bai Xiaodu let out another sigh of relief. Damn that Director-General Shen. If not for her, he could have wrapped up the call just now. Bai Xiaodu really couldn't wrap his head around it.
Did ruining his relationship with Xin Hai'an benefit her in some way? Damn it, even if you were raising a dog, you'd still let the dog go out to mate! Did the owner think the dog was too cute and decide to take care of it herself? No matter how he thought about it, that was impossible.
Even if he had said such offensive things before, it was essentially just the childishness of a young boy. To someone like her, who came from a prominent clan and held an official position, she would at most laugh it off as passing wind. Wouldn't hanging around a lowlife like him lower Director-General Shen's status?
Unable to figure out her reasons no matter how hard he racked his brain, Bai Xiaodu could only attribute it to Director-General Shen having a sudden fit of sadistic, psychotic whimsy!
To prevent any further accidents, he quickly prepared to say a proper goodbye.
“Good—”
As it turned out, one should never say—or even think—the phrase "prevent any further accidents." Otherwise, an accident would definitely happen!
Sensing Director-General Shen's face suddenly drawing close, Bai Xiaodu couldn't even get the word "bye" out. Without hesitation, his finger dashed toward the hang-up button!
Click, click.
His usually incredibly nimble fingers felt as though they had been filled with thousands of tons of cement today. He was crowd-controlled again.
Director-General Shen, you should go play support! I bet you'd easily become a prodigy in the pro league! You'd definitely be this year's FMVP!
Bai Xiaodu stared at his phone in frustration, looking at his thumb which was a mere centimeter away from the hang-up button! From the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of Director-General Shen's alluring face as she continued her close approach. A delicate, elegant fragrance wafted into his nose.
Her lips pursed slightly, and she leaned her upper body down to gently plant a kiss on Bai Xiaodu's right cheek. Bai Xiaodu voluntarily raised the phone's microphone and voluntarily brought it closer to where the kiss landed.
Baji~
Just like the cough from before, the volume of this sound was controlled to perfection, ensuring that the person on the other end of the line could hear it crystal clear.
Go to hell, Director-General Shen.
A flush of red crept up Bai Xiaodu's neck like a fever. It wasn't the shyness of being kissed by a beautiful older sister. It was because he was about to blow his top from pure rage.
“What was that sound? Bai Xiaodu!”
The voice on the other end came in a rapid flurry, and she even shouted his full name loudly at the end.
Haha. She instantly blew her top.
Though he couldn't see what was happening on her end, Xin Hai'an was definitely fuming right now. After all, to someone like her, a kiss was considered an incredibly intimate act. Moreover, hearing a woman cough on the other end of a call with her crush, followed by the sound of a kiss... Anyone would start imagining some scandalous scenarios.
He had no time to worry about how Director-General Shen was pressing her overly plump chest against his back, or how her cyan eyes were staring intently at him. Within a few short seconds, Bai Xiaodu came up with a solution!
Adjusting his tone to sound slightly embarrassed yet full of yearning, he pretended not to hear the urgency and anger in her voice.
“Wow, Sister Xin Hai'an, their relationship is so good. It's really enviable.”
“What do you mean 'their'?! Don't change the subject—”
“We were discussing the battle plan, and those two were standing so close. Tsk tsk tsk, they just started kissing right in the middle of talking. It's making me feel so awkward just standing here.”
“You... Oh, oh.”
But this wasn't enough. Just this alone wouldn't completely dispel her suspicions!
Bai Xiaodu quickly pulled the phone further away. It was time to use a special skill he had trained specifically to meet his clients' needs—vocal mimicry!
Bai Xiaodu intentionally deepened his voice, perfectly mimicking a man in his twenties.
“Baby, we're going on a mission soon, and I've already booked a hotel. Let's spend the night together to properly sort things out, okay? Hmm?”
Then, he immediately raised his pitch to sound like a slightly embarrassed young woman. His original voice naturally had a youthful, boyish quality, and as everyone knew, many male protagonists in anime were voiced by women. Therefore, his imitation of a young woman's voice was absolutely flawless.
“Oh, stop it~ Xiaobai is still right here. You're going to corrupt the kid...”
Xin Hai'an fell silent.
Hearing the voices clearly, her cheeks, which had been slightly flushed with anger, grew even redder. She cleared her throat twice.
“Don't look at them. Just finish your mission quickly and come back early, okay? You'll have to make up for the time of mine you've wasted double! Once you help me handle those messy company affairs... Who knows, maybe I can reward you with a very, very deep kiss of my own!”
Bai Xiaodu let out a sigh of relief.
“Really? Then Xiaobai will definitely do his best!”
Hearing his reply, Xin Hai'an felt her face burn. That was too bold! So bold that it sounded like something Xin Tianyue would say, not her. But for some reason, a surge of excitement welled up in her heart. It was as if... As if this wasn't a reward for Bai Xiaodu, but a reward for herself!
Her thoughts couldn't help but drift back to before. Recalling the sensation of their lips and teeth intertwining, Xin Hai'an unconsciously squeezed her long legs together. Bai Xiaodu was perfectly fine. Very obedient and honest. She was very satisfied.
But because her words just now had been a bit too daring, her mind was in a mess, and her face was burning hot. She could only hum in agreement to everything Bai Xiaodu said.
The call disconnected.
Sitting in her office, she pursed her lips and was about to resume her work. However, Xin Hai'an realized that something was slightly off with her body's state.
Opening her drawer, she found it completely empty. She quickly stood up and walked to the door with a slightly awkward gait.
“Get me some tissues.”
Lina yawned. She looked at Xin Hai'an in surprise, but quickly pulled some out of her pocket and handed them over.
“Lady Xin Hai'an, didn't you just go to the restroom?”
Xin Hai'an's face flushed crimson. She stammered for a good while but ultimately said nothing, quickly hurrying away.
