Jaden had planned this for three years—three years!
He could only use his backup plan now.
But the side effects of that plan were too severe, making it highly disadvantageous for him to become Hera City's hero after the war. However, he could no longer afford to care about that.
Nothing could stand in the way of his path to becoming a king.
In the sewers of Hera City, a hidden magic circle began to glow. As the magic circle activated, a massive amount of mist began to spread toward the surface.
“What is this?”
A person on the surface of Hera City muttered as they watched the white mist rise from underground.
Then, he felt his feet begin to itch. The itching rapidly spread throughout his entire body.
As the white mist was breathed into their lungs, their internal organs began to mutate and fail under its effects.
Soon, people began collapsing to the ground under the toxic mist, scratching themselves raw all over before dying a miserable death.
“It's poison! The monsters are poisoning the city!”
“Stay away from the white mist rising from the ground!”
“Quick, go warn the City Lord! Tell him to be careful of the white mist!”
The City Lord was Hera City's beacon of hope. If the City Lord was also poisoned by the monsters' despicable plot, Hera City would be doomed.
“To think it would be poison!” Flora muttered in disbelief from atop the city wall as she watched the toxic mist rising from beneath Hera City.
What kind of heart could conceive such an action?
They had worked so hard to hold the city gates, preventing the monsters from massacring the citizens. Yet, they resorted to poison.
Resorting to such despicable means, all for the sake of his own political future.
Countless commoners desperately tried to escape the toxic mist, running wildly toward areas where the gas had not yet reached.
They scrambled onto rooftops and climbed up chimneys, only to look down in terror at the people struggling and writhing in the streets.
They watched them scratch at their skin as if trying to tear it off.
Terror and despair gripped everyone.
Soon, someone noticed that the toxic mist only seemed to spread in the outer city. No toxic mist was seeping from the ground of the inner city.
In an instant, countless terrified people rushed toward the inner city, pounding desperately on the inner gates.
However, with monsters attacking outside and toxic mist spreading inside, how could the wealthy, the nobility, and the respectable citizens of the inner city possibly open the gates?
They blocked the inner city gates with everything they had, directly aiding Jaden's plan. Or rather, these reactions were entirely within his calculations.
“Let us in!”
“I don't want to die! Please let me in, I beg of you!”
“At least let the children in! Please, let our children in!”
The citizens outside the inner city held up their children, looking pleadingly up at the wall.
“Shut up! Back away!”
An arrow shot down from the wall, piercing clean through a man who was throwing himself against the gates.
Blood splattered as his corpse slumped to the ground.
“Hey, why did you shoot?!”
“Who knows if those peasants are carrying the toxic gas? Besides, he was pounding on the gates.” On the wall, the young man who shot the arrow, dressed in luxurious clothing, spoke as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“They want us to die!”
“The lords of the inner city want us to rot out here!”
“There is no poison in the inner city, yet they won't let us in!”
The dead man's body lay right beneath the inner city gates. The striking crimson blood served as the ultimate catalyst for a riot.
Instantly, countless enraged people began to throw themselves against the gates, striking the walls with tools.
The riot inside the city had begun.
This completely severed any remaining chance of the gates being opened. Arrows rained down continuously from the wall, putting an end to one life after another.
Until finally, the ground beneath the gates was littered with bloody corpses. Some were riddled with arrows, while others had their heads crushed by stones.
Yet, all of this only earned a satisfied nod from the perpetrator.
“The soul power within the city is just about sufficient.” Jaden, wearing a mask of absolute fury, remounted his horse. By now, his physical strength was fully restored.
“Despicable monsters have released a toxic mist in the city!”
“Such underhanded tactics cannot be forgiven!”
“Make them pay with their lives! Kill every last one of these wretched beasts!”
He shouted as he furiously led his knight order to charge into battle once more.
This time, he no longer held back, slaying as many goblins as possible to obtain enough soul power.
The five-meter-tall, giant-like goblin king also led its goblin army to charge into the fray.
It wore an iron crown, was clad in heavy armor, and wielded a five-meter-long steel blade. Each swing of its weapon whipped up a powerful gale.
As both sides clashed and killed, they absorbed the soul power present on the field, aiming to make a breakthrough.
Guards and adventurers poured out of the gates, unleashing their rage upon the goblins and monsters.
Evelyn was currently riding her horse, charging from the north into the battlefield outside the west gate.
Their plan had failed.
They had prevented the monsters from entering the city to massacre the populace, but they never expected Jaden to be so insanely depraved as to poison the city himself.
By now, Jaden had likely gathered a portion of the soul power. He was now striking with full force, planning to use the souls of the goblins and monsters to gather the rest.
“Evelyn, what should we do? If this continues, they and the goblin king will actually complete their plan and advance to High-tier!”
With both sides currently competing, if either side is killed, the other will absorb their soul power and advance directly to High-tier.
Furthermore, the most critical issue remained.
From the very beginning, Jaden had maintained his perfect disguise as the City Lord. This was his shield.
If they were to attack Jaden now, they would likely be targeted by the city guards.
Those innocent, blinded guards were Jaden's best protective layer and armor.
Yet, if they attacked the goblin king, Jaden would immediately advance to High-tier upon its death.
“Flora, sometimes standing by your justice and your heart requires a cruel price.” Evelyn drew the sword at her waist.
“What... do you mean?” Flora had an ominous premonition.
“Even if I have to kill every single innocent guard, I will slay Jaden. I cannot allow a butcher like him to live, no matter the sacrifice.”
“Do you have that resolve?” Evelyn looked at Flora, causing Flora to feel the suffocating weight of this harsh reality.
Beneath her golden mask, the cold killing intent and unwavering determination in those light-blue eyes did not shake in the slightest.
“Puji.”
[I will kill Jaden.]
Vera landed next to Evelyn, and Zoe brought up his dialogue box.
“You don't need to go this far, Mr. Slime. I am already deeply grateful to you.”
[I have my own reasons for why I must do this. Besides, of everyone here, a monster like me is the most suited to undertake this task.]
[Evelyn, do you remember the promise I made before?]
Evelyn's body swayed slightly, seemingly taken aback.
“To protect the Slime Territory... Don't tell me you already planned back then to...”
[You aren't the only one who has prepared their resolve.]
Listening on the side, Vera had stopped understanding what they were talking about halfway through.
Right now, Vera only wanted to fight. Fighting was the absolute best!
“I will fulfill our promise no matter what.” Evelyn, for the first time, removed her golden mask in front of Zoe, swearing an oath with her true face.
Zoe stared at Evelyn for a moment.
“Puji.”
[I've memorized this face. We will meet again “afterward.”]
Looking at Zoe's dialogue box, Evelyn put her golden mask back on.
“Definitely.”
“Flora and I will deal with the goblin king. I'll leave Jaden to you.”
Evelyn did not question whether Zoe possessed the power to defeat Jaden.
From her time spent with him, she knew that Zoe was not the type to blindly agree to things beyond his capabilities.
“Puji.”
[I have a plan.]
[The people around Jaden have all been deceived by him. They have no idea he is the culprit behind all of this.]
[Because of that, it's hard for us to make a move on them. However, I can also make it so that it is hard for them to make a move on me.]
