Bai Feifei: ?
By this point, after experiencing so much, she had developed a certain obsession with the idea of saving Dawn City.
So, seeing the Lord Evil God sitting back so calmly, she felt extremely anxious.
But there was nothing she could do. Perhaps the Old-Timer had his own judgment. Right now, she couldn't regain control of her body.
She could only temporarily remain in the state of an "impotent husband" and let out a sigh.
At this chaotic moment, however, the three Edgerunners who actually had the power to end the turmoil were all slacking off.
Liu Yun stood before Liang Shuguang, staring at the lifeless man as if she had fallen into a trance, making no move whatsoever.
No one knew what she was thinking, or if she simply couldn't accept reality.
Not far behind her, Scorpio Kong Man and Qiu Jing stood back-to-back, neither of them moving.
Qiu Jing was on guard against the person behind him. The Rangers were never friends, and he didn't want to be the first to expose a weakness.
Meanwhile, Kong Man watched everything with great interest, a faint smile even playing on her lips.
“What is your purpose in coming here?” Qiu Jing asked with a furrowed brow. “With things in such a mess, are you really just here to watch the show?”
“Shh, shut up. I’m on the phone!” Kong Man replied testily.
The water droplet vibrated gently in her ear canal, transforming into an earbud once more.
“Yueyue, good job. You really found me a great spot this time,” Kong Man teased with a chuckle. “I feel like I’m about to witness a truly spectacular show.”
As she spoke, her gaze happened to lock with “Bai Feifei’s.”
At that moment, Xu Mo was standing in the center of the combat zone, looking around as if none of this concerned him. Right through the chaotic crowd, he grinned at Kong Man.
“Thanks for keeping an eye on the place, kind passerby,” Xu Mo mouthed, waving his hand in greeting.
Kong Man was taken aback. She hadn't expected the other party to be so relaxed. Then, she smiled too and blew a kiss to the strange girl.
But even as she blew the kiss, her heart chilled. This guy had recognized her, and he wasn't surprised by her presence at all...
He had certainly seen the world.
At the center of the chaotic venue, there were currently two main combat zones.
One combat zone surrounded Wan Qianhong, where a crowd was launching frantic attacks.
In her Unceasing Purple state, Wan Qianhong did not fear such an onslaught. With her skyrocketing defense, her armor could easily withstand their strikes.
However, she lacked Xu Mo's unique methods. Facing fellow Edgerunners, she couldn't easily kill them either. For a moment, they were deadlocked, and she was merely wasting her stamina.
In her anxiety, she instinctively looked over to see how her teammate was doing, only to go completely numb.
Because in the other combat zone, absolutely no one dared to make a move against Bai Feifei.
She just stood there nonchalantly, looking entirely indifferent and with no intention of fighting. The two sides simply stared at each other in a tense standoff.
Those surrounding her were extremely tense, while she herself was completely relaxed.
This was a stark contrast to Wan Qianhong's side.
It couldn't be helped. Under Xu Mo's control, the persona established for Bai Feifei was far too terrifying, leaving everyone deeply wary.
Moreover, she had actually demonstrated methods capable of slaying an Edgerunner!
Fighting her carried a genuine risk of death.
Looking at the bottom-feeders around him, Xu Mo even found the time to tease them, saying:
“Why aren't you attacking?”
“Heh, good. You've made the right choice. Take a break first.”
“Spend some time reflecting on your lives. There's no rush to die.”
Everyone clenched their fists, veins bulging on their arms, but they still forced themselves to hold back.
No one even dared to shout insults, for they were utterly defeated in spirit, knowing they couldn't win a war of words anyway...
Ye Hanshan stood up, looking around at the chaotic scene. As a Family Head, a trace of bewilderment appeared in his eyes.
He had never expected the situation to spiral out of control so instantly. He muttered to himself, “Damn it, how did it come to this? What should we do now...”
He was straightforward and had never taken sides. Among the five major families, the Ye family's standing had always been relatively low.
As for now, he was even more hesitant.
He couldn't understand what those Scavengers charging forward were thinking. Were they really that loyal to the City Lord?
Besides, the City Lord was already dead! What would happen from here on out?
For a moment, the present, the future, and all kinds of uncertainties threw his mind into utter chaos.
Suddenly, Ye Hanshan felt someone tugging at his hem. Looking down, he saw it was Ye Yu.
Looking up at her father, Ye Yu uncharacteristically refrained from calling him "old geezer," speaking with utmost seriousness instead:
“Dad, I remember you telling me before.”
“When doing things, we can't just weigh the gains and losses. We must also consider right and wrong...”
Ye Hanshan looked at his daughter, momentarily dazed.
...
The battle around Wan Qianhong continued, and the riot among the crowd grew increasingly violent.
Just then, a massive, droning hum echoed throughout the entirety of Dawn City.
Hummm—!
In an instant, it felt as if everyone had suddenly developed tinnitus.
A green screen of light rose simultaneously from the four corners of the Inner City, expanding at an unbelievable speed. In the blink of an eye, it enveloped all of Dawn City!
All the Scavengers besieging Wan Qianhong instantly fell into a frenzy of joy, roaring in her direction:
“That's it! None of you are escaping today! Die here!”
Then, some of them began screaming at the rioting citizens:
“Everyone! Dawn City has reached its absolute final hour of crisis!”
“If you wish to protect yourselves and avenge the City Lord, focus your minds and meditate! Use your will to power our city defense array!”
As it turned out, the five-element protective barrier was the final shield established after the disaster thirty years ago.
No one knew whether its principle was based on a Containment Object or a Word Soul left behind by some powerhouse. Even Wan Qianhong had only heard of it but never seen it.
In short, it required four Scavengers of at least Edgerunner rank to simultaneously activate the array cores in the north, south, east, and west.
At the same time, the citizens of the entire city had to offer their willpower to officially activate it.
Staring at the green screen of light in the sky, Wan Qianhong's eyes became bloodshot.
This was Dawn City's ultimate defense mechanism, originally intended to fend off a tide of aberrations when the city faced absolute destruction.
It was clearly Dawn City's final hope!
Yet now, it was being exploited by these schemers to trap her and Bai Feifei.
In the split second her mind wavered and her stamina was heavily depleted, several attackers seized the opening, slamming their attacks into her body simultaneously.
Wan Qianhong let out a muffled groan. Her body wavered, and she plunged from the sky, crashing heavily onto the high platform.
Just then, a voice echoed from behind her.
The voice was as gentle as always, though it carried a touch of melancholy at this moment:
“If it comes to this... does it count as the people's own choice?”
