Leopold immediately fell into deep thought. The leader of the swamp highland probably harbored no ill intent.
However, just as humans did not accept sorcerers, sorcerers likely did not accept humans either. After all, a century of hatred was not something that would easily vanish.
Leopold folded the summary paper and tucked it into his breast pocket.
“When will the representatives from those three settlements arrive?”
“The one from the forest canyon is the fastest; they should be here the day after tomorrow. The one from the abandoned mine shaft will be a bit slower, taking about four days.”
“As for the one from the swamp highland...” Adele raised her eyes, pausing briefly before continuing slowly, “they only said, ‘I will come when the time is right.’”
“When the time is right?” Leopold frowned. As expected, the other party remained wary.
Adele caught something in his tone. “Do you think it is inappropriate, sir?”
“No, it's nothing.” Leopold rubbed his temples, beginning to map out his next step. “For a sorcerer who has lived for over a hundred years, it is only natural to be highly cautious.”
Adele nodded, gathered the scattered papers on the table into a neat stack, and stood up to walk toward the door.
“Then I shall write back first and have them set out at the scheduled time.”
“Adele, wait a moment,” Leopold suddenly said. “You know George, right?”
“George? That knight?”
“Yes. You've met him, right?”
“I have. He lived in Blackstone Town for nearly two years and would visit the cathedral every few days.” Adele walked back to the table and set the papers down. “The people in the cathedral call him ‘that foolhardy young man.’
“Foolhardy?”
“He never avoids the Demon Race like other humans do. Instead, he behaves as if he is eager to match strength with them.
“Those of us sorcerers in the cathedral refer to his kind as the ‘combat faction.’”
“Combat faction?” Leopold caught the term. “He can't defeat the Demon Race, right?”
“He cannot,” Adele admitted. “In the beginning, any ordinary demon soldier in the cathedral could easily overpower him. He would come to fight every few days, and each time he would leave black and blue from the beating.
“But later on, this kid's growth rate made even the Lord of the Black Tide take interest.”
Leopold felt as if he sensed something. It seemed this George was indeed a remarkable talent!
“Why didn't they turn him into a demon?” Leopold asked probingly.
“Because of his spiritual light, sir,” Adele said. “The Lord of the Black Tide needs a vast amount of spiritual light—the kind that can be utilized.”
Indeed, Leopold lowered his eyes in contemplation.
Sorcerers and the slaves gathered from all over alike were being prepared for that secret ritual.
Every day delayed made the preparations for the ritual a bit more complete.
It seemed time would not always be on their side. Within half a month at most, Cabin Village had to launch an attack!
“Put some extra care into the matters regarding those three settlements. Once the letters are delivered, have them come find me directly as soon as they arrive.”
Adele nodded, turned, and went out.
Leopold stood by the table for a moment, then went out as well. Isabella followed behind him. In the yard of the hunter's cabin, the sunlight was already slanting toward the west.
The two walked along the village path for a stretch before he spoke. “I plan to make a trip to Blackstone Town.”
“Now?”
“We set out tonight.”
Isabella didn't ask why. She merely smiled and followed behind Leopold, perhaps already guessing what he was thinking.
“Okay.”
The two walked east along the path between the fields. Upon reaching a secluded stretch of woods, they transformed into dragons and sped toward Blackstone Town.
“Flying in the sky together again, Leo.”
“Hold on tight, Bella,” Leopold replied. “We must arrive before the sun sets, or else it will be the Lord of the Black Tide's home turf.”
“Then we won't be able to slip in quietly,” Isabella said, slightly folding her wings as she glided through the air.
“Let's make a big scene then!” Leopold replied.
Dusk pressed in from the west, and the silhouette of Blackstone Town appeared somewhat blurry in the darkening light.
At the cathedral entrance, two guards leaned against the wall, yawning. One of them rubbed his eyes, looked up at the sky, and mumbled casually, “It's almost dark.”
The other nodded. “Once it's dark, the Lord will come out. There has been a lot going on in the cathedral lately, so we'd better stay sharp.”
“After work, want to grab a few drinks?”
“Who dares to drink now? The inspections have been so strict lately.”
“True. I heard someone else was killed by the Demon Race in the east of the town...” Before the guard could finish, his attention was drawn to two black dots in the distance.
“What is that?”
The two guards at the cathedral entrance looked up, the spears in their hands nearly slipping from their grasp. What they saw defied their understanding.
“A dragon... it's a demonic dragon!”
Before the guards could react, the people on the street were already screaming in terror.
The black dots dived from the horizon, tearing through the air. The flags on the walls fluttered frantically, and the defending soldiers instantly lost all courage to fight.
Two dragons burst through the twilight—one black, one white—their massive wingspans blocking the light of the entire street.
Boom—!!
Leopold landed on the cathedral dome, and Isabella landed beside him.
The cathedral dome cracked beneath his feet, and loose rubble rolled down the sloped roof, crashing onto the stone steps of the main entrance.
On the street below, some threw down their belongings and scrambled into the alleys, while others fell and were trampled by those behind them. Screams and cries mingled together, swept in all directions by the twilight wind.
Leopold stood at the highest point of the dome, looking down at the chaos below, his golden eyes radiating silent majesty.
The white dragon's claws gripped the stone carvings on the edge of the dome. She tilted her head to sweep her gaze downward.
“Leo, how do we find George?”
“We stand our ground. Noble dragons never actively seek out others.” Leopold glanced at Isabella.
As Leopold expected, several squads of demon soldiers quickly poured onto the street, panic-stricken as they aimed various weapons at Leopold.
The leading demon officer looked up, desperately suppressing his fear as he yelled at the top of his lungs, “Please leave! This is the territory of the Demon Race!”
“The territory of the Demon Race?” Leopold lowered his head, his dark golden vertical pupils locking onto the officer. “Since when was it your turn to draw boundaries on this land?”
Two more squads of soldiers poured onto the street. Spears and crossbows aimed at the dome from all directions, and the air was filled with endless noise. For a moment, the scene was in utter chaos.
Roar—!
Leopold let out a long roar toward the sky. Instantly, the windows on both sides of the street shattered, and countless chaotic noises were drowned out by the majestic dragon roar.
Leopold's gaze swept over the crowd below. The demon soldiers froze in place like rows of nailed wooden stakes. Dragon Fear was far too direct for low-tier fallen demons.
The cathedral doors opened at that moment.
A figure walked out from the doors, a greatsword at his waist, clad in iron armor.
He turned, and facing Leopold's pressure, his entire body began to tremble uncontrollably.
Leopold narrowed his eyes, his dark golden pupils studying the young knight.
George looked up at the black dragon on the dome, his Adam's apple bobbing. Then, he did something no one expected.
He thrust his greatsword into the floor tile in front of him and knelt down heavily!
“O supreme dragon, please accept my submission!” George's tone could not hide his excitement. “I have waited a long time for this day!”
Huh?
