More than ten minutes later, Tyr arrived at the City Defense Knight Order's office building by carriage.
On the second floor, inside the commander's office.
Commander Elys was leisurely puffing on a cigar, his mind wandering to which lady's cozy nest he would visit tonight.
“Bang!”
Suddenly, the office door was flung open, and a knight rushed in, looking completely panicked.
“Commander, the Callis family carriage has arrived.”
For noble children like them living in the Grand Duchy of Callis, the Callis family crest was far too conspicuous.
“If they're here, then go welcome them. Why are you in such a panic? You're making a fool of yourself for no reason.”
Because the events at the temple yesterday had been executed in secret by the Inquisition, and Bishop Coos had been taken back to Carlo's mansion to be locked up, Elys had no idea that the Caslant temple branch had already collapsed.
Although the name of House Callis did strike some fear into him, his posture instantly straightened when he remembered that House Aglaia stood behind him.
Snuffing out the cigar in his hand and putting it on the desk, Elys stood up, straightened his clothes, and walked out the door.
A moment later, Elys arrived at the entrance, leading the knights of his faction.
As for Hyde and his commoner knights, Elys had left them inside the building on the pretext that the knight order's headquarters could not be left unguarded.
In truth, this was utter nonsense. Since they were welcoming the guests right outside the front doors, what difference did it make whether anyone was inside the building?
Elys simply did not want Hyde to gain the appreciation of the noble from House Callis. Even if the chance of that happening was only one in ten thousand in his eyes, he would not allow it.
He would not give Hyde even the slightest opportunity for promotion. A commoner belonged in the mud, rotting away.
The filthy, muddy “swamp” was where they belonged, not dreaming of things they had no right to desire.
Screech—
The carriage came to a halt in front of the City Defense Knight Order's headquarters. Avia and Mia stepped down first, then reached out to help Tyr and Sevira disembark.
“Elys Adri, Commander of the Caslant City Defense Knight Order, greets Young Master Callis and Miss Callis.”
Tyr paid him no mind, walking straight past him toward the headquarters building of the City Defense Knight Order.
Elys did not feel the slightest bit offended by Tyr's complete lack of courtesy.
Just as he would shamelessly look down on and ignore lowly commoners, it was only natural for a high noble like Tyr to ignore him.
A moment later, Tyr entered Elys's office and sat directly in the master seat.
Just as Elys was about to step forward to curry favor, Tyr's voice rang out.
“The Caslant City Defense Knight Order shouldn't consist of only you people, right? Summon everyone here.”
“Young Master Callis, all the key personnel of the City Defense Knight Order are already here. If you have any orders, you can just tell us.”
Elys naturally knew who Tyr was referring to, but he had no intention of letting Hyde and the others come over.
“I recall there was someone named Hyde, wasn't there? He was the one who met with me at the abandoned cathedral yesterday. Bring him to me.”
Tyr spoke in a flat tone. Even without the aid of his Innate Sword Heart, it was not difficult to guess Elys's thoughts.
Elys initially wanted to make other excuses, but when Tyr's gaze fell upon him, he inexplicably felt as if he were being completely seen through.
“Wade, go call Hyde and his subordinate knights back.”
Under the watchful gaze of Tyr, Elys ultimately ordered his subordinate to call Wade over.
At the same time, he cursed inwardly. If he had known, he never would have let Hyde go yesterday. He had no idea what Hyde might have said to Young Master Callis.
He better not have said anything he shouldn't have in front of Young Master Callis. Otherwise, once this matter is resolved, I will definitely make Hyde pay.
As he gave Wade the order, Elys also gave him a meaningful look, signaling him to warn Hyde not to speak out of turn when he arrived.
Wade understood immediately. Taking the order, he turned and left the office.
Outside a storage room on the first floor of the City Defense Knight Order's building, Hyde and his knights were gathered together.
“I wonder what that noble is doing here at the knight order. Boss, do you think he's here for Elys? After all, Elys showed him zero respect the other day.”
One of the knights beside Hyde spoke up.
“Shut up. Do I really need to teach you what can and cannot be said, and where?”
Hyde glared at him fiercely. Didn't he know that trouble comes from the mouth?
Although they had joined the City Defense Knight Order, they were still commoners at the end of the day. If Elys wanted to make their lives miserable, he had far too many ways to do so.
“Aw, Boss, they're probably busy kissing that noble's boots right now. They don't have time to worry about us.”
“Aika, if you keep having that kind of attitude, it only proves you aren't suited to stay in the City Defense Knight Order.”
Hyde's gaze sharpened. If Aika kept speaking so recklessly and caused trouble, he wouldn't be the only one facing the consequences.
Elys already disliked him. When the time came, the commander would surely find all sorts of ways to assign him dangerous missions, and the commoner knights under his command would undoubtedly be dragged down with him.
“Boss, don't be angry. I'll stop, I'll stop.”
Seeing that Hyde was genuinely angry, Aika spoke in an apologetic, sheepish tone.
Just then, the sound of leather boots clicking against the floorboards echoed down the hall.
The moment they heard the sound, Hyde and his men immediately snapped into formation, looking completely unlike people who had just been chatting.
“Follow me. The young master wants to see you.”
Wade cast a glance at Hyde and his men, the disdain in his eyes completely undisguised.
“Yes, sir.”
Hyde did not ask why the noble wanted to see them, merely responding in a respectful tone.
He had once been hot-blooded like Aika, but painful lessons over and over had taught him that in this world, commoners could never win against nobles.
“I'm warning you. Once you see the young master, do not say anything you shouldn't.”
On the way to the office, Wade warned them sternly.
“Yes, sir.”
Hyde gave his usual formulaic reply, and the knights under his command answered in the same manner.
Wade was very satisfied with their reaction. They were just a bunch of commoners; they wouldn't dare harbor any foolish ideas anyway.
A moment later, Wade and the others entered the office.
“Since everyone is here, explain it to me. Why did it take you half a month to confirm that the Abyss demons were the ones harming people?”
“And that was only because people kept losing their lives during those two weeks. If not for that, you probably would have taken even longer to discover it.”
“Now, give me a valid reason.”
