Chapter 16 | The Novel Marked Me for Death, So I Found a Cheat Game Instead

“Get out of the way and hide well. I'm going to kill the dark creatures.”

After glaring fiercely back at Ye Lin and the other two, Lin Kuo casually threw a Scorched Earth Talisman forward, which could turn the earth into lava.

“Roar! Roar!”

As the Scorched Earth Talisman was thrown, raging flames instantly erupted across the entire island, and angry beast roars echoed from within the fire.

The next moment, a giant purple crab over three meters tall burst out from the ground with a loud bang. Waving its massive claws, it charged straight at Lin Kuo.

“A mere Qi Condensation evil spirit dares to act presumptuously before me, a grand Foundation Establishment cultivator? Watch me—”

Seeing the dark creature rushing toward him, Lin Kuo originally intended to make a powerful move to show Ye Lin and the others the terrifying strength of a Foundation Establishment cultivator.

But before he could finish his dramatic buildup, Ye Lin’s righteous voice rang out from behind him:

“Captain, let me help you!”

Then, with a loud boom, the menacing Qi Condensation Stage crab was blasted directly into a bloody mist by a Fireball Talisman.

【Ding! You have slain a heinous evil spirit crab. Class change progress +1. Current progress: 1/100.】

【Ding! You have slain an otherworldly creature. The trait ‘The Strictest Father of Other Races’ has been activated. You have obtained 80 years of evil spirit lifespan.】

【Ding! The Desolate Ancient Dao Pagoda has automatically gathered the evil spirit's vital energy and blood, which can be channeled back to you at any time.】

Just as the purple crab was blasted into a bloody mist, three consecutive game system notifications chimed in Ye Lin’s ears.

“My guess was indeed correct. The dark creatures invading the Heavenly Desolation Continent and causing chaos everywhere are absolutely heinous. Killing them speeds up the class change progress for the 【Lord of Heaven's Punishment】.”

Seeing the class change progress finally budge, a dark, shimmering light flickered in Ye Lin's eyes as he looked at the island ahead.

It was the look of a predator spotting its prey.

After all, killing dark creatures now would speed up his class change progress.

He could also absorb their lifespan, refine their bodies to extract vital energy and blood, and essentially get three uses out of a single beast. Who could resist falling in love with these evil spirits?

“If I also had a Ten Thousand Soul Banner to absorb their souls, that would truly be making the most of everything, providing a one-stop service to exploit these dark creatures to the absolute limit,” Ye Lin murmured to himself.

Perhaps sensing his thoughts, or for some other reason, the Soaring Fairy Visualization Chart that had been resting quietly in the Sovereign Heaven rippled imperceptibly at this moment.

Then, a tiny wisp of soul power was drawn in from the surroundings and instantly refined.

Ye Lin naturally didn't notice the change in the visualization chart. At this moment, he was facing the astonished and resentful gaze of his squad leader, Lin Kuo.

“As a member of the human race, I must suppress and kill all enemies who dare to invade our domain,” Ye Lin said solemnly, his expression unchanging.

Hearing this, Lin Kuo gave him a bizarre look. If he was so highly principled, why hadn't he shown any reaction when Lin Kuo was giving his passionate speech earlier?

But seeing that Ye Lin had indeed used a precious talisman to kill the dark creature, he reluctantly believed his words.

After all, he knew Ye Lin came from the remote Great Desolation Village and had no background. This Fireball Talisman, obtained through some stroke of luck, had to be his trump card.

Yet he had been willing to use it without the slightest hesitation. Naturally, this made Ye Lin's words highly credible.

“Roar! Roar! Roar!”

By now, the Scorched Earth Talisman had turned the island's ground into molten lava. One by one, dark creatures crawled out from underground, shrieking in pain.

“Back away quickly! Fireball Talismans are meant for saving your life, not for casual combat!”

Seeing Ye Lin pull out two more Fireball Talismans, ready to throw them, Lin Kuo's lips couldn't help but twitch.

No, seriously, he was a youth from a remote mountain village. Where did he get so many highly destructive talismans? And was this really how he used them?!

“Captain, the wind is too strong! What are you mumbling about? You want me to quickly activate them, right? Don't worry, I'm doing it right now!”

With his eyes full of passion for the evil spirits, Ye Lin couldn't care less about what Lin Kuo was saying. He only caught the word "activate."

With evil spirits attacking, he obviously had to activate the talismans and turn the tide. Could the captain have meant for him to run away?

Lin Kuo: “?”

Fine, fine, telling him not to worry... Who was the one in a rush here?!

He could finally see it. This kid Ye Lin simply loved slaying evil spirits. He was utterly addicted to it, and he was even afraid of others stealing his kills.

“No wonder he was able to kill an evil spirit back in Great Desolation Village. Although his talent is a bit lacking, his fighting spirit and courage make him highly suitable for serving in the Demon Suppressing Division.”

Seeing Ye Lin's fierce behavior, Lin Kuo's expression grew somewhat complicated.

Just yesterday, he had confidently concluded that Ye Lin's talent was ordinary, and despite his decent temperament, he wouldn't achieve much in the future.

But now, seeing a newcomer like Ye Lin charging so bravely at the evil spirits—even if he was relying on talismans—Lin Kuo couldn't help but look at him in a new light for his courage and selflessness.

He recalled the first time he faced an evil spirit; he had been so terrified he couldn't even stand straight, let alone fight.

With this kind of mindset and drive, even if Ye Lin's talent was ordinary, as long as he didn't die young, he would surely live a brilliant life.

However, he had no chance of stopping Ye Lin's spendthrift behavior now, as Ye Lin had already activated several Fireball Talismans and thrown them out.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

As several low-grade Fireball Talismans were activated and thrown, the dark creatures that had just crawled out from underground didn't even have time to take a breath of fresh air before being blasted directly into a bloody mist.

【Ding! You have slain a heinous evil spirit scorpion. Class change progress +1. Current progress: 2/100.】

【Ding! You have slain a heinous evil spirit spider. Class change progress +1...】

【Ding! You have obtained 90 years of evil spirit lifespan.】

As the dark creatures were blasted into bloody mist one after another, the pleasant game system notifications chimed continuously in Ye Lin's ears.

While Ye Lin was enthusiastically slaying the dark creatures, his two teammates in the distance, Zhao Xiaoyu and Li Xuan, were leisurely chatting via voice transmission.

“Do you think he might be like us—a genius from some Sacred Land who came to this godforsaken Tianyuan Dynasty for that legendary opportunity?”

“Probably not. I see he's only wearing a mid-grade spiritual robe and throwing low-grade talismans. A genius from a major power wouldn't be this broke, right?”

“True. Should we also make a move and kill a few evil spirits to blend in better?”

“But the weakest talismans I have are high-grade. A single one can kill a Golden Core Stage cultivator. If I throw one out, not only will our identities be exposed, but I'm afraid those two will be blown to pieces on the spot.”

“Same here. Sigh, if it weren't to wait for that legendary opportunity, I would have broken through to the Golden Core Stage long ago. Why would I still be a little Qi Condensation trash now?”

The two chatted back and forth. Before long, Ye Lin had completely slain all seven dark creatures on the island.

【Ding! You have slain seven cancers invading the Heavenly Desolation Continent, contributing to the maintenance of this world's natural laws. In the dark, the Heavenly Dao has cast a sliver of appreciative gaze upon you. Congratulations! Your Luck Value has increased by 35 points.】

Just after slaying the dark creatures on the island, an unexpected game system notification suddenly chimed in Ye Lin's ears.

“I thought the rewards for killing these dark creatures were already generous enough. I didn't expect the Heavenly Dao to reward me with Luck Value as well!”

This unexpected pleasant surprise made the desire in Ye Lin's eyes for the evil spirits burn even deeper.

Summing up the rewards a single dark creature could drop for him: first, increasing his class change progress; second, providing evil spirit lifespan; third, refining their corpses into vital energy and blood.

Fourth, the Heavenly Dao rewarding Luck Value; fifth, generating demon-slaying points on the academy's disciple token upon killing them.

And if he added the sixth point that he wasn't yet aware of—the Soaring Fairy Visualization Chart absorbing the evil spirits' souls...

A single evil spirit could drop so many rewards. This was literally the "beast of his dreams." How could anyone not fall in love and go crazy for them?

“Captain, the evil spirits here have all been executed. But demonic chaos is still raging in other places, and our fellow humans are being harmed every single moment. The beasts of my dreams are still waiting for me...”

“Ahem, what I meant to say is that countless desperate compatriots need our rescue. So, let's hurry to the next area of demonic chaos to slay the demons!”

Withdrawing his gaze from the smoldering island, Ye Lin immediately looked at Lin Kuo with impatience.

If the map detailing the areas of demonic chaos hadn't been in Lin Kuo's possession, he would have probably rushed off to find his dream beasts without a second thought.
