“Here they come again.”
As three hundred banelings rose into the sky, tracing elegant parabolas through the air as they flew toward the city, the city defense officer's brow couldn't help but furrow tightly.
It had been days. He didn't know how much longer the mages could hold out.
Regardless, the consumption of magic crystals within the city was immense, but considering the Kingdom's reserves, holding out for a few months shouldn't be much of a problem.
Unfortunately, in the next moment, his mood turned completely sour.
A series of explosions, far more terrifying than anything seen before, erupted against the outer side of the barrier. After several hundred successive blasts, the magnificent magic defense array began to tremble violently.
At a nearby node, several mages maintaining the formation spat out blood, suffering internal injuries.
Seeing this, other mages immediately stepped up to take their places.
The moment they took over, the expressions of these mages shifted to one of shock and alarm.
“How did the power increase this much?”
Indeed, this batch of banelings had all been upgraded by one tier.
Back with Xia Jin, she was delighted to see the defense array shaking.
“It looks like they won't last many more waves.”
She decided to strike while they were weak.
The second batch of banelings quickly crawled forward.
Simultaneously, thousands of scourges let out whistling shrieks as they plummeted from the sky in waves, crashing into the barrier. A large number of mutalisks, even without having been upgraded, charged toward the enemy's city walls in swarms.
“Griffin legions, and the remaining falcon knights, take to the air! Mage unit, engage the enemy! Dammit, we must hold the city!”
The air force commander roared in terror. Countless knights sitting nearby blew their whistles, signaling their mounts to crouch down.
Soon, countless giant creatures took flight, launching a counterattack against the unending swarm of insects in the sky.
“All hydralisks, fire spines!”
Swoosh!
Swoosh, swoosh!
One black shadow after another, like artillery fire, slammed into the magical barrier.
A large number of mages were forced to take up the defense at that moment. One by one, their mental energy was drained in an instant, and they collapsed to the ground, drenched in cold sweat.
Only then did they realize they had still underestimated the strength of the Zerg.
Boom!
Boom, boom, boom, boom!
The second wave of banelings struck the barrier.
Crack!
Fine cracks appeared on the thin film of light. Although they were quickly repaired, they were immediately followed by scourges that managed to break through the line of defense.
“This city's defense is just too ridiculous.”
Xia Jin really wanted to complain; she had never fought a war with such high losses.
Every wave of attack cost hundreds of thousands of units of standard energy. Even with high production rates, she couldn't afford to keep consuming it like this.
By now, some infestors had also rushed into the vicinity, continuously launching their own attacks against the barrier.
Even though the Kingdom's city was launching a non-stop barrage of artillery fire toward them, with explosion after explosion, the insects still didn't care about any losses.
Finally, after four consecutive waves of baneling bombardments, the magic shield shattered with a crisp sound like breaking glass.
In an instant, a massive volume of attacks poured onto the city walls.
The capital's walls were a staggering ten meters thick, with a winding shape that even extended into the inner city at several points. Countless giant towers were situated atop the walls, and behind them, the terraced ground rose level by level, hosting countless cannons.
The moment the shield shattered, many cannons that had been unable to fire due to power supply issues now unleashed their fury.
In that instant, the Swarm felt as if they were in hell.
Swoosh—
Swoosh, swoosh—
From the top of the distant city walls, fireballs weighing tons were launched by magic catapults, tracing parabolas through the air.
The zerglings charged toward the opposite side like a tsunami.
Knowing that the first wave would take heavy damage, Xia Jin was careful this time. She mixed countless locusts into the zergling charge to pad the numbers, at a ratio of 1:10.
In other words, one zergling was mixed with ten locust cannon fodder during the charge. Faced with the enemy's firepower, this greatly reduced the losses.
By the time the Swarm's charge reached the base of the city, they had already been bombarded countless times. Their actual density could only be described as pathetic.
These insects climbed directly up the city walls.
As the zerglings' claws struck the walls, they could feel a magical solidification power. Even with their Tier 6 strength, they were still unable to break the stones.
Two hydralisks suddenly burrowed out from the soil beneath the city wall.
They had originally planned to burrow from under the wall to the interior, but it was clear that even though the outer shield had shattered, the barrier beneath the city remained firmly in place.
Seemingly enraged by their progress being blocked, these two hydralisks used their arms to barely carve shallow notches into the city wall. After several attempts, they relied on brute force to climb to the top of the wall.
With a single strike from their massive blades, they sent the Tier 5 human warriors before them flying.
Even though the capital's City Guard was one of the most elite forces in the entire Kingdom, it was still impossible for every soldier to be of an extremely high tier.
Soldiers of Tier 4 and Tier 5 still existed.
Of course, there were many Tier 6 experts in the City Guard.
In many lords' territories, a Tier 6 individual would already be a commander-level figure, but here in the capital's City Guard, they could only serve as a squad leader of ten or a hundred.
But what did that matter?
In terms of increasing their strength, the Swarm was clearly far superior.
