Faced with such a situation, in order to thoroughly eliminate the mutants, the Legendary and demigod powerhouses prioritized launching a fierce assault on the Mother of Mutation and Flesh.
However, the fleshy root system of the Mother of Mutation and Flesh had already spread throughout the underground of the entire Southern Continent, constantly and frantically absorbing flesh and blood as nutrients. Her strength had already far surpassed that of ordinary living beings.
This was further compounded by the obstruction of a massive number of mutants.
As a result, this battle was fought with extreme brutality.
Fortunately, after a large number of powerhouses perished, the Mother of Mutation and Flesh was finally thoroughly slain, turning into countless chunks of flesh that scattered all over the Southern Continent.
It was also then that everyone discovered to their shock that with the death of the Mother of Mutation and Flesh, almost all mutants fell into a state of suspended animation.
It was as if their entire nervous centers had been destroyed.
After some observation, they came to a conclusion: most mutants possessed no inherent intelligence or ability to think, and they were collectively controlled by the matriarch—the Mother of Mutation and Flesh.
Once the matriarch was killed, these offspring naturally lost their ability to act independently.
After confirming the validity of this conclusion, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Reinforcements from various factions began to orderly land on the Southern Continent to clean up the mutants scattered across the entire landmass.
However, to everyone's surprise, not long after the reinforcements landed, those mutants on the Southern Continent that had not yet been cleared away suddenly came back to “life” once more!
The remaining powerhouses set out once again, only to discover in shock that another mountain of flesh had burrowed out from underground...
It was shockingly a new Mother of Mutation and Flesh.
Only then did they realize that once these mutants lost their matriarch, they would spontaneously breed a new one to control the swarm.
Although this newborn Mother of Mutation and Flesh was clearly not as powerful as the previous one, she had inherited her predecessor's continent-spanning tentacles. She was like a weed whose roots were deeply embedded in the soil, constantly absorbing nutrients.
As long as all the tentacles and mutant creatures could not be thoroughly eliminated in a short period of time, the new Mother of Mutation and Flesh would be like wildfire grass that grows back when the spring breeze blows. She could rapidly restore her strength in a short time by devouring other mutants.
In other words, the only way to completely kill the Mother of Mutation and Flesh was to thoroughly destroy the entire Southern Continent in a short amount of time, leaving her with no possibility of resurrection.
But destroying a continent in a short time was easier said than done.
That was, after all, the second-largest continent of the Material Plane.
Even with no one to stop them, it would take an extremely long time for demigod powerhouses to destroy such a massive landmass.
To destroy the Southern Continent in a short time, perhaps only the legendary deities could achieve such a feat.
Yet, the gods did not seem to have any intention of taking action...
To prevent the Material Plane from falling, as a last resort, the powerhouses had no choice but to urgently evacuate all uninfected people from the Southern Continent.
Subsequently, they used the “Dream Crown”—a divine artifact left behind in the world from the Twilight of the Gods—to plunge the Mother of Mutation and Flesh into an eternal slumber.
Along with her, all mutant creatures also fell into a state of suspended animation.
As long as they were not disturbed, they would sleep forever.
However, they needed to prevent anyone in the future from attempting to enter the Southern Continent to awaken this Mutant Matriarch and trigger an unnecessary disaster.
To this end, the powerhouses set up a “program” for the Dream Crown.
The crown began to continuously absorb the dream energy generated by the Mother of Mutation and Flesh during her slumber, turning it into a dream mist that enveloped the entire continent, completely sealing off the Southern Continent.
Only then did the catastrophe that swept through the entire Southern Continent come to an end at such a heavy cost.
“But why would mutant creatures appear in the Underdark beneath the Eastern Continent now?” A deep sense of doubt arose in Irene's heart.
After all, back when the Southern Continent was sealed, to prevent its catastrophe from repeating, a grand sweep was conducted across the entire Material Plane under the call of the powerhouses of various races.
If there had been mutant creatures left outside the Southern Continent back then, given their terrifying rate of infection, an outbreak should have occurred long ago over all these years.
It wouldn't have suddenly appeared in the Eastern Continent only now.
Mutant creatures did not seem like the type to bide their time.
“Fire!!!”
A sudden roar pulled Irene's thoughts back to reality.
Looking out, she saw cannonballs shooting from the alchemical cannons prepared in advance on the city walls. Drawing beautiful parabolas in the air, they plunged into the approaching mutant beast tide.
“Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!”
Amidst the series of violent explosions, massive fireballs began to bloom like flowers within the dense swarm of mutants. Under the intense blasts and high temperatures, the mutant creatures within the blast radius were instantly blown into charred fragments of flesh.
Even the yellow sand on the ground was turned into crimson crystals under the ultra-high temperature.
Yet, this still could not halt the advance of the mutant beast tide. The mutants behind quickly filled the gaps left by the explosions. They did not even let the fragments of flesh scattered everywhere go to waste, grabbing and stuffing them into their mouths.
They did not understand what civilization was, nor did they care about waiting their turn.
Some unfortunate mutants had barely stuffed the chunks of meat into their mouths before they were torn into fresh meat themselves by other mutants who swarmed them, drawn by the same flesh.
For a time, fire, explosions, and splattering chunks of flesh and organs became the main theme of the battlefield.
In such chaos, the beast tide quickly neared the towering black city walls.
Another roar resounded: “Open fire!!!”
Instantly, the Black Knights lined up on the city walls pulled the triggers of their firearms. Rune-engraved bullets shot out, and upon hitting the monsters, the violent magic energy contained within exploded, dealing massive area-of-effect damage only slightly inferior to that of the alchemical cannons.
Yet, this still could not completely halt the charge of the beast tide.
Mutant after mutant surged to the foot of the wall, pouncing forward with a wet splat, slamming into the wall like mud. After a brief, chaotic scratching of tentacles and limbs, they slid down into the deep trench dug in advance below.
As time passed, the trench was quickly filled with wailing, twisting mutants.
It was also at this moment that Irene finally understood why the city walls had to be built so high.
But this still could not stop the mutants' offensive.
Although these mutants could not scale the sheer wall on their own, by throwing themselves forward wave after wave, they gradually piled up into a ramp of flesh.
Subsequently, the oncoming mutants began to climb up the ramp of flesh toward the top of the wall, constantly increasing the height of the makeshift ladder.
With layer upon layer stacking up, they were on the verge of reaching the top of the wall.
However, the Black Knights unhurriedly began to hurl rolling logs, boulders, and even pour fuel down the wall.
As a bolter shell ignited the fuel, the entire wall instantly erupted into a raging inferno. Amidst ear-piercing wails, the mutants collapsed and disintegrated like a bursting dam, turning into piece after piece of freshly roasted meat, ranging from rare to well-done.
These were then torn apart and devoured in large chunks by the oncoming mutants behind them.
The scene was practically a massive, open-air buffet barbecue!
