“Mother, you don't need to worry.”
Noticing Irene's serious expression, Arthas, who was floating beside her using the Levitation Spell, began to explain:
“Though these mutants are vast in number, they basically still retain their instincts as dark-aligned creatures.
“They extremely detest sunlight. As long as we hold out until dawn, this mutant beast tide will retreat on its own.”
“Is that so?”
Seeing that the Black Knights were extremely skilled in dealing with the mutant beast tide, and that the beast tide seemed temporarily unable to breach the city, Irene breathed a slight sigh of relief. Looking out at the endless stream of mutants surging forward like a tide, she asked:
“Since the collapse of the tunnel dug by the dwarves, have these ugly things that don't even realize they're ugly been teaming up to terrify people every single night?”
“No.”
Arthas automatically ignored Irene's teasing, quickly extracted the core of her words, and said solemnly:
“Actually, when the tunnel dug by the dwarves first collapsed, probably because the God-Forsaken Land was too desolate, almost all the mutants that poured out chose to head to the other side of the Ersencielo River.
“At that time, the number of mutants our Black Dragon Empire had to face was extremely small. Most of the time, they couldn't even form a beast tide. We only needed to clear them out once, and we might not see another one for weeks.
“However,” Arthas shifted his tone, “as time went on, we encountered mutants more and more frequently, and in greater numbers. Over the past six months, these mutants have even begun to show a trend of no longer fearing sunlight, refusing to retreat during the day.
“If this continued, we would have had no choice but to awaken you to take charge of the situation.
“Fortunately, you have now awakened.”
“Then... what about the losses?” Irene rested her hand on her chin, her tone exceptionally calm. Judging by what she had seen in the city, she assumed they hadn't suffered much loss.
Arthas's immediate reply validated her thought.
“Thanks to the scattered population of the Black Dragon Empire, each tribe has its own defensive measures. In addition, we've achieved some results in decoding the technology left behind by the ancient beastkin over the years...
Saying this, Arthas looked at the bolters held by the soldiers on the city walls. “So the mutants haven't caused much damage to the Empire for now.
“On the contrary, the Human Kingdoms have suffered quite heavily compared to us.”
Arthas's tone grew even deeper.
“When the beast tide first poured out of the tunnel, while attacking the Dwarven Empire, some branches crossed the San Pedro Mountains and entered the Great Gana Forest. They infected a large number of magical beasts within, forming an even larger beast tide that surged toward the Human Kingdoms. These magical beasts did not fear sunlight and caused massive losses to the Human Kingdoms for a time.”
“Oh? And how did they deal with it?” Irene narrowed her eyes, a hint of slyness appearing on her face.
Although she understood both her past and present lives, she had no intention of confessing everything she knew to the Eastern Kingdoms, let alone all of humanity.
Doing so would be no different from seeking death; it was simply too foolish.
At least until she uncovered the full truth of everything, she would maintain absolute vigilance toward these 'compatriots.'
“The high-ranking officials of the Eastern Kingdoms have already contacted the other continents,” Arthas said in an emotionless tone, completely oblivious to his mother's expression.
“But it will take some time for reinforcements from the other continents to arrive. To prevent the Eastern Continent from completely falling like the Southern Continent, the Eastern Kingdoms spontaneously gathered a group of high-end combatants. They intend to enter the collapsed tunnel to kill the Mutant Matriarch that might be inside, thereby temporarily paralyzing the mutant beast tide and buying time for the arrival of reinforcements from the other continents.
“They also came looking for you, wanting to recruit you to execute this plan together, but you were asleep at the time, and His Grace Daviel was not in the city...
“We didn't dare make the decision on our own.
“Afterward, they went ahead and executed the plan first. However, from the looks of it now, they have not yet achieved the desired results.”
Hearing this, Irene nodded slightly.
She didn't feel any annoyance or anger just because her vassals hadn't woken her up, causing her to miss out on executing the 'decapitation strike' right away.
After all, that was going to kill a Mother of Mutation and Flesh, not going to some young idol's concert or a high school reunion.
Faced with a Mutant Matriarch, a single mistake could result in dying amidst the endless mutant beast tide, only to be infected and corrupted into one of them.
Furthermore, her status was unique. If those powerhouses of the Eastern Kingdoms made a sudden decision to take the opportunity to eliminate her, a black dragon, while killing the Mutant Matriarch...
It would be a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, getting rid of two 'cancers' at the same time!
However, this matter did concern the Eastern Continent and even the entire plane, severely affecting her own living space. After a moment of thought, Irene asked, “Has the source of the mutation been clarified?”
“I'm sorry, Mother. Please forgive my incompetence,” Arthas replied. “We have not yet cleared up where the mutation originates. However, according to the news from the Eastern Kingdoms, it is certain that the dream mist of the Southern Continent still exists. In other words, that Mother of Mutation and Flesh is still in a deep sleep.”
“Is that so? It seems the Eastern Continent won't completely fall in the short term.” Irene sensed the power of faith within her body slightly, formulating some plans regarding that potential Mutant Matriarch.
Since it now concerned her own safety, as long as she could guarantee her own security, Irene didn't mind wading into these muddy waters.
With the versatile power of faith as a trump card, she didn't need to worry too much about running into disasters.
Irene's eyes shifted slightly downward.
Within her gaze was a dense, black mass of mutants.
After experiencing defeat after defeat, these fellows had finally exhausted the rolling logs, boulders, and fuel in the hands of the Black Knights. Now, like a dense swarm of ants, they waved their tentacles and scaled the edge of the city wall amidst harsh, ear-piercing screeches.
However, a cold light flashed. Amidst the spray of turbid, viscous bodily fluids, several slippery tentacles, along with the heads of two mutants, flew high into the air.
It was a Black Knight who had drawn the chainsword from his back, the two red lights glowing beneath his helmet stretching into two red ribbons as his arms swung!
“Vroom! Vroom! Vroom!”
The roars of chainswords resounded one after another along the city wall!
More and more Black Knights abandoned the bolters in their hands, drew the chainswords from their backs, and slashed with angry roars.
“Vroom! Vroom! Vroom!!!”
Protected by their power armor, the Black Knights didn't need to worry about the mutants' flesh infecting them, so they swept through the enemies with even greater effort!
The chainswords roared! Tentacles and viscous black blood splattered!
For a time, the entire city wall was practically reduced to an efficient and bloody meat grinder.
Not a single mutant could break through the blockade of this meat grinder!
“Based on the current situation, holding out until dawn shouldn't be a problem,” Arthas said calmly, as if stating a commonplace matter.
Yet, it was as if something was determined to oppose him.
Just as his voice fell, the entire city wall began to vibrate slightly.
And the vibration grew more and more intense!
At the same time, a sound wave swept in from the distance like a ripple!
“Aaaaaahhhhh!!!”
An ear-piercing shriek, like a hundred thousand geese screaming together, exploded in everyone's ears as the sound wave arrived.
Everyone affected by the sound wave, including the mutants, was momentarily dazed.
Even with Irene's powerful constitution, her ears couldn't help but sting slightly.
