What a sincere and deeply felt speech, but looking at the information on the Rain's Message panel, Bai Ci only found his display laughable.
Why was this man in business? He would make a much better actor.
【Temporary Rain's Message NPC: Wa Yeyao | Appearance: Beast in human skin | Identity: Owner of a construction materials shop, believer of the cult "Guiling Cult." He once offered his ex-wife and son as sacrifices to the cult's evil god in exchange for his business picking up. Hypocritical, skilled at putting on a front, honey-tongued but dagger-hearted, with an extremely strong desire for control. | Relationship with Player: Blind date partner | Skill Levels: Strength 6, Spirit 5, Agility 4 | Special Skills: None | Life Status: Curse [What is Love] in effect】
The Rain's Message panel not only stripped away Wa Yeyao's disguise completely, but its evaluations of her blind date partners were also becoming increasingly blunt.
Yet another demon in human skin.
Of the first two, one was a murderer, and the other was a cowardly enabler. This one was even more ruthless, directly offering his own wife and son as sacrifices to an evil god of a cult, all just to boost his business.
Now that business was down again, he wanted to find another wife to sacrifice. Truly the scum of the scum.
Scum like this deserved to die long ago. The curse falling on him could be considered ridding the world of an evil.
Seeing Bai Ci remain silent, Wa Yeyao didn't show the slightest panic. He continued to look at her indulgently, his tone patient: “Miss Bai, it's alright. You don't have to rush to answer me. We can take our time to get to know each other.”
“I know you might still have reservations about my previous marriage. I can wait. I'll wait until you can slowly accept me.”
Mother Bai quickly smoothed things over: “Oh, Mr. Wa, please don't overthink it. Our Cici is just introverted and doesn't talk much.”
“I see you're such a good person, so down-to-earth and reliable. I'm sure you'll take great care of our Cici.”
“Why thank her? It's my decision who I marry; my mom's approval doesn't matter.” Bai Ci, who had always behaved silently, suddenly spoke up, giving everyone present quite a shock.
“Cici...” Mother Bai still wanted to turn things around.
“I don't think Mr. Wa and I are meant to be. That's all.” Bai Ci stood up and left.
Meanwhile, at the Bureau of Investigation, the investigation into Si Diyi's death was still in full swing.
After more than half a day of searching, the investigators finally dug up a partial skeleton under a tree in the backyard of Si Diyi's home.
The skeleton was highly decomposed, with only some fragmented bones and a few scraps of clothing left. After a preliminary identification, the skeleton was determined to be female, with an estimated time of death of about one year ago.
To confirm if this skeleton belonged to Si Nian and to verify the origin of the lingering resentment at the scene, the glasses-wearing investigator took samples of the bones early in the morning to the verification department, marking it as urgent again.
Thanks to a recent batch of new equipment acquired by the Bureau of Investigation, the sample submitted for testing near noon had its report ready by the time they were about to get off work in the afternoon.
People were coming and going in the hallway, mostly busy investigators. The glasses-wearing investigator had just retrieved the report and was walking briskly. Just as he turned a corner, he bumped into a familiar figure.
“Brother Li?” The glasses-wearing investigator stopped in his tracks, recognizing the other man.
At this moment, Brother Li was frowning deeply, his expression anxious and his steps hurried. He simply waved his hand at him as he rushed out, not even having a spare moment to talk.
Behind him followed several investigators from Unit Three, each of them looking solemn, as if something urgent had occurred.
Watching their hurried departure, the glasses-wearing investigator felt a trace of doubt rise in his heart.
Unit Three was also a standard-sized unit. Normally, they were fully capable of handling cases independently without assistance from other units.
If they really needed help, since almost the entirety of Unit Two was in the hospital, they should have looked to Unit One instead.
Why was there only one person from Unit Two involved?
Unless there was an issue with a case that Unit Two had been responsible for, so the only member of Unit Two who was currently up and running was working alongside Unit Three, who had taken over the case.
Could it be that something had gone wrong with the design institute case that was closed yesterday?
Thinking this, the glasses-wearing investigator quickened his pace back to the Unit One office.
Rather than guessing blindly here, the well-informed member of his unit would definitely know something for sure.
In the office, An Shu was sitting in front of her computer, organizing the files related to Si Diyi and Si Nian, while the young investigator was being watched by his mentor as he practiced writing an investigation report.
The glasses-wearing investigator returned to his seat, took a sip of water to clear his throat, and spoke.
“When I went to the verification department to pick up the report just now, I ran into Brother Li. He was with the people from Unit Three, in a real hurry. I don't know what happened.”
Hearing this, An Shu, who was organizing the files, suddenly stopped what she was doing. She looked up and gave the mentor investigator sitting near the door a look.
Understanding her silent cue, the latter shut the half-open door.
Only then did An Shu lower her voice and say: “I know what they went to do.”
“Yesterday afternoon, someone infected with an incurable anomalous disease died.”
The young investigator froze, a puzzled look appearing on his face: “Died? Isn't that normal? In the anomalous events our Special Investigation Unit handles, when does someone not die?”
“It's different.” An Shu shook her head, her face wearing an expression that said 'you are still too young.'
“The deceased was an employee of the design institute—one of the victims from the infected case that Brother Li's unit went to handle before.”
“Brother Li and his team already eliminated the source of the infection yesterday. Logically speaking, even if the infected individuals couldn't fully recover, they shouldn't die from the infection flaring up again.”
She paused, then added: “But according to the surveillance footage, that victim suddenly fell ill and died after Brother Li and the others had already dealt with the source.”
“The manner of death was exactly the same as the previously infected—sudden organ failure, with all internal organs rapidly necrotizing. It was clearly a symptom of the infection flaring up.”
The office instantly fell silent. Now that An Shu had put it this way, everyone present was an investigator—how could they not understand?
Even the most inexperienced young investigator, having passed the exams to enter the Bureau of Investigation, had theoretical knowledge that would tell him there was a massive problem here.
The young investigator was puzzled: “That's strange. Since the source has already been dealt with, why would anyone still die from the infection flaring up?”
“Could it be that they didn't actually eliminate the source at all? Or is it that even if the source is dead, the infected are still doomed to die?”
“It's precisely because the reason is unclear that Unit Three was urgently dispatched over there.” An Shu sighed.
“As you know, there are quite a few employees at the design institute, and over a dozen of them are infected. If it really is either of those two reasons, it could trigger a mass casualty event. It'll be a massive headache then.”
