“Sir, please wait a moment.”
The receptionist operated the magic tool in front of her, and a moment later, she pulled up a document.
“Sir, a caravan named Asher is heading to Valenhill tomorrow, and they are currently recruiting Silver-rank mercenaries. What do you think?”
“That works. Sign me up for that one.”
After registering the information to complete his quest, Tyr turned and left the Mercenary Guild.
As Tyr reached an intersection, his eyes suddenly flickered. He then turned and walked toward an inn at the corner of the street.
After Tyr left, three mercenaries poked their heads out from behind a corner.
Once they confirmed which inn Tyr was staying at, one of the thinner, smaller mercenaries spoke in an uncertain tone.
“Boss, are we really going to rob him? He killed Ronal, a peak Third Circle.”
“Idiot, do you actually believe he killed him? You just believe whatever he says? I bet someone else killed Ronal but couldn't show their face for some reason, so they had him bring Ronal's head to claim the bounty.”
The burly mercenary among the three dismissed the idea. He simply did not believe that someone as young as Tyr could possess the strength to kill a peak Third Circle.
“But what if he's a noble? I've heard that the genius children of those nobles cultivate at an absurdly fast pace.”
“Are you kidding me? A noble coming to the Mercenary Guild?” The burly mercenary scoffed as if he had heard a joke. “Besides, I happen to know that even among nobles, only descendants of those top-tier noble families could possibly reach the Third Circle at his age.”
“But noble children of that caliber would be even less likely to become mercenaries. Those young masters look down on being a mercenary.”
“In their social circle, doing something like that is considered incredibly beneath them.”
In truth, by normal logic, the burly mercenary's reasoning was completely sound.
Unfortunately, he had run into Tyr, who had only registered as a mercenary because he didn't want to carry a rotting head all the way back.
“But...”
“Just shut up. It's because you're always so timid that you stayed stuck at the First Circle for so long back then.”
“There are three of us now, and Boss is a peak Second Circle Transcendent. How could we not handle a little brat like him?”
The skinny mercenary wanted to say more, but he was interrupted by a short mercenary beside him.
“Boss, when do we make our move?”
The short mercenary looked up at the burly mercenary, his eyes shining with pure greed.
That was fifty gold coins. If they spent it carefully, it would be enough to cover their expenses for several years.
Tyr might look down on fifty gold coins, but that didn't mean fifty gold coins was a small sum.
For an ordinary family, fifty gold coins was enough to last them half a lifetime.
“What's the rush? We need to make sure that the person who actually killed Ronal isn't with him. Otherwise, wouldn't the three of us just be walking to our deaths?”
“If you want to die, go by yourself. Don't drag us down with you.”
The burly mercenary glared at the short mercenary. They weren't afraid of the kid, but that didn't mean they weren't afraid of the person who had killed Ronal.
“Boss is right.”
After being scolded by the burly mercenary, the short mercenary laughed sheepishly.
...
At night, pitch-black darkness enveloped the entire town.
While it wasn't quite pitch black where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, visibility was still under ten meters.
In a dark alleyway, three stealthy figures were conspiring.
“How is the surveillance going? Has anyone else gone to that kid's room during this time?” the burly mercenary asked the other two.
“Don't worry, Boss. I've been watching the whole time. That kid is definitely alone right now. He hasn't met up with anyone.”
The short mercenary said confidently. He hadn't even eaten dinner today just to keep his eyes on Tyr.
“I didn't see anyone else meeting with him either,” the skinny mercenary added. After thinking it over this afternoon, he also agreed that the boss was right.
How could they possibly run into the scion of a top-tier noble family with the strength to kill a peak Third Circle at such a young age?
Besides, whenever those noble kids went out, they always rode in carriages, surrounded by a massive entourage of attendants.
“Good, let's move.” Once he confirmed that Tyr was still alone, the burly mercenary immediately decided on their next step. “Keep your movements quiet, you two. Don't alert him beforehand.”
“Once we grab the gold, head straight into the sewers to escape. If anyone gets caught by the City Defense Knight Order, don't blame me for leaving you behind.”
“Don't worry, Boss. This isn't our first time doing this. We know the drill.”
The short mercenary patted his chest, his face filled with eager anticipation.
At the thought of the fifty gold coins that would soon be theirs, he was already imagining the comfortable life he would lead over the next few years.
“Let's go!”
The three mercenaries crouched low and crept toward the inn where Tyr was staying. They coated their feet in magic power to make their movements completely silent.
On the other side, the sleeping Tyr suddenly opened his eyes.
He sat up and glanced toward the window. “They certainly are patient.”
Meanwhile, at the base of the wall outside Tyr's room, the three mercenaries looked up at his window.
“Wait for my signal. The three of us will burst in and attack him together. We must ensure a swift kill.”
Even though they believed Tyr's strength wasn't much, when it came to robbery and murder, unleashing one's full strength to instantly eliminate the target was always the best approach, regardless of who they faced.
“Understood, Boss.” x2
A moment later, the three leaped up the wall and arrived outside Tyr's window.
“Do it!”
The burly mercenary gave a low shout and lunged forward, crashing into the room.
The skinny and short mercenaries followed closely behind. Upon entering, they immediately unleashed a barrage of attacks toward the bed.
However, they quickly realized that the sensation didn't feel like they were striking a human body.
“Wait, stop.”
At the burly mercenary's command, the other two stopped in unison.
The three of them looked toward the bed together, only to find that other than a heap of ruined wooden boards, there was nothing there.
The short mercenary even stepped forward and lifted the blanket. There wasn't even a trace of blood, let alone a person.
“Boss, he's not here.”
The short mercenary tossed the blanket aside and turned to the burly mercenary.
“Dammit, where did he go?”
The burly mercenary cursed in frustration. He had thought this robbery would be foolproof, yet the target was missing.
“Are you looking for me?”
Just then, a clear voice rang out, causing the trio's scalps to tingle.
Up until that very moment, they hadn't detected any other presence in the room.
