She gave Nan Yue a meaningful look. "I think she was transferred to a department that doesn't exist on the surface."
Nan Yue leaned back. "...The Mobile Division."
What happened last night? Why did Tan Jiaojiao, who broke the rules, resign, while Bi Danyuan, who was merely caught up in it, was transferred to the Mobile Division—a place that had never even appeared in the scavengers' sights?
"I understand."
Nan Yue took advantage of the lunch break to find Wen Xiang Yuan. When she found her, Wen Xiang Yuan was in the office, seemingly still working.
Strangely, the other ordinary employees had gone to rest. Logically, if Wen Xiang Yuan didn't rest, they couldn't either, unless Wen Xiang Yuan had told them otherwise.
Wen Xiang Yuan's expression wasn't great, but even a beauty with a dark face was still a beauty. Fortunately, her mood clearly shifted from gloom to sunshine upon seeing Nan Yue, and she started to wave.
Nan Yue gave her a sharp look, and only then did Wen Xiang Yuan notice Nan Yue's ID badge was now V6. She let out a small gasp and stood up to greet her formally.
Nan Yue made a casual gesture and leaned in close to Wen Xiang Yuan, pretending to discuss work.
"I found some clues regarding what you mentioned last time."
Before Nan Yue could even ask, Wen Xiang Yuan spilled everything she knew.
Her supervisor, Liu Ming, was in charge of logistics. She had discovered that Zhao Mingran had indeed resigned, and it was at Liu Ming's request.
Because such an incident had occurred on the first day, Liu Ming felt he had lost face, so he uploaded the request for the company to intervene via the system.
The second matter involved Qi Qiao. Speaking of this, Wen Xiang Yuan felt a bit indignant.
"She's as slippery as an eel and didn't say anything clearly."
"She just said she went to Lan Jing Shui because she wanted a powerhouse to protect her, and that she didn't encounter anything special that day."
Nan Yue wasn't surprised that Wen Xiang Yuan hadn't gotten anything out of her. Since Qi Qiao had sought refuge with Lan Jing Shui, she naturally wouldn't easily reveal the terms she used to trade for her life.
Seeing Wen Xiang Yuan's puffed-up, angry look, Nan Yue couldn't help but chuckle.
"This is the situation I've gathered so far."
Nan Yue shared a portion of her clues and then made her own request.
"I want you to help me check last night's surveillance footage to see if there was anything unusual."
Wen Xiang Yuan's eyes lit up again. "Okay!"
When Nan Yue was about to leave, Wen Xiang Yuan was still very excited. It gave Nan Yue the illusion that Wen Xiang Yuan didn't care about the clues she received, but was instead happy just to have something she could do.
"By the way, why are you the only one here?"
Although the two only had a relationship of exchanging information, Wen Xiang Yuan was very simple-minded, so Nan Yue asked one more question.
Wen Xiang Yuan suddenly deflated. "I offended Liu Ming, so the others don't respect me much either."
Although the company's job ranks were clearly defined, the person in charge had a veto power. If you offended the supervisor, you would have no prestige even if you were a V4 senior employee.
Nan Yue frowned. "What did you do?"
Wen Xiang Yuan curled her lip. "That guy tried to force the 'unspoken rules' on me."
Nan Yue had heard before that Liu Ming's private life was messy and that his secretaries were all beautiful girls, but she had thought that since Wen Xiang Yuan had reached a letter city in only three missions, she should have her own way of dealing with it.
She hadn't expected her to offend the man instead.
Perhaps because Nan Yue's expression was a bit heavy, Wen Xiang Yuan comforted her in turn.
"It's fine. He said he'd give me a few more days to think about it. I should be able to get the surveillance footage within these few days."
Nan Yue felt a bit helpless. "In this company, if you offend a superior, it's easy to be forced to resign. For a scavenger, that likely means death."
"You have to find a way to protect yourself."
If Wen Xiang Yuan had an awakened ability or tools to save her life, that would be best. If not, there were other ways to deal with the situation.
Wen Xiang Yuan looked at Nan Yue for a while before saying, "You're actually a really good person."
Nan Yue was puzzled.
"The scavengers I've met usually push others out to test the path. As long as they can get clues, they don't care at all about whether others live or die."
"Were you worried about me just now?"
Nan Yue thought for a moment and admitted it frankly. "We're partners. You're helping me find the clues I need, so it's normal for me to care about you. After all, you haven't harmed me."
"We all grew up together and have the same mission. Unless it comes to a life-or-death situation, I naturally don't want anything to happen to you."
As she spoke, Nan Yue made a small joke. "Besides, humans are visual creatures. You're so beautiful that I can't help but be a bit partial."
Wen Xiang Yuan pursed her lips and smiled. Every move she made gave Nan Yue the illusion that Wen Xiang Yuan was like a noble lady from some mission world.
Only someone with a high level of education and family upbringing could have such proper movements.
Some scavengers could possess such an aura, but that was the result of going through too many missions, built up by life, death, and experience, carrying a hint of world-weariness.
Nan Yue had truly never seen someone like Wen Xiang Yuan, where innocence and nobility coexisted.
So, what Nan Yue said was true. She privately did not want anything to happen to Wen Xiang Yuan.
Wen Xiang Yuan could tell that Nan Yue cared about her and smiled. "Don't worry. I will definitely find what you asked me to check!"
When Nan Yue went back, she made a special trip to the Sales Department to check on Gu Xiang Kai's situation. To her surprise, many people were gathered there, and she even saw people from the medical team.
"What's going on?"
Seeing that it was the V6 rising star, the employees gathered in front made way for Nan Yue, explaining all at once.
"A newcomer seems to have had a heart attack."
A heart attack?
Nan Yue squeezed through to Gu Xiang Kai's side and saw the newcomer who had supposedly suffered a heart attack.
"Zhong Jian from our Sales Department. He came in with my batch. He suddenly dropped dead while working today."
Gu Xiang Kai explained as everyone tried to strike up a conversation with Nan Yue. No one felt anything was wrong.
"Oh? Sudden death? From overwork?"
Nan Yue didn't even look at Gu Xiang Kai, her voice somewhat cold.
"That's what the medical team said. But he really was pushing himself these past two days. He even ate his meals at his desk, and his mood swings were huge."
Gu Xiang Kai paused and said as if in passing, "I passed by today and heard him talking to himself constantly, saying that the clients this time were especially troublesome and that he was worried about failing the evaluation."
Nan Yue turned and exchanged a look with Gu Xiang Kai. She understood his hint.
This Zhong Jian was a scavenger, but he had become excessively immersed in his role as a low-level employee.
While she didn't know if it was because he believed failing would lead to death, at least in Gu Xiang Kai's view, he had gone off the deep end.
Scavengers would get anxious when facing a mission with no leads or when they felt they were about to hit the mission's bottom line.
But Zhong Jian's logic was very clear; he was worried about failing because of the clients.
He seemed... to truly think that way.
The people around them were a bit jealous that Gu Xiang Kai had managed to talk to Nan Yue, and they chimed in. "Little Zhong was indeed hardworking. He had already become a part of the company. Such a pity."
Following his words, the medical team put Zhong Jian's body into a body bag.
It was at this moment that Nan Yue saw the state of his death.
