The scent of scorched flesh and the stench of blood mingled, hanging thick in the air inside the prison facility.
Rosie held her sword, her boots stepping over a sticky, slippery patch of ground.
The adult Mammothkin had all been dealt with, their colossal bodies covered in burn marks and deep gashes.
Little White crouched by Rosie's feet, tugging gently at her pant leg before leading her toward an inconspicuous room off to the side of the corridor.
The doorway was blocked by a heavy metal plate. Little White reached out with its paws and scraped at the edge of the plate.
“Master, inside...”
Rosie reached out and pushed the plate aside.
The interior of the room was dark, emitting a mixture of various scents.
Five Mammothkin calves, each about the size of a small pony, huddled in the corner. Filled with confusion and fear, they stared at the intruders and let out low, whimpering grunts.
Rosie's gaze swept over their bodies, and she raised her sword, preparing to step forward.
“Wait, Miss Rosie,” Knight John's voice came from behind her. “We can keep them.”
“If we don't weed them out completely, they will only cause trouble later,” she said without looking back.
Knight John said, “Once these Mammothkin reach adulthood, they will be massive and incredibly strong. They make excellent slaves or beasts of burden. If we kill them now, we get nothing.”
“Aren't you afraid they'll rebel when they grow up?” Rosie asked.
Knight John smiled and said, “Before they were domesticated, dogs were wolves. In the human kingdoms, beastkin slaves are quite common. As long as you use the right methods, it won't be a problem. Just like how you trained that rat.”
Rosie thought about it, glancing back at the calves huddled together.
“Are they worth much?”
“Very valuable!”
It was the female mage, Anna, who spoke.
“In the Merchant Coalition, a healthy Mammothkin calf can fetch up to a thousand gold coins, and females go for even more.”
“Well, I'm not one for mindless slaughter either.” Rosie decisively sheathed her sword. “I'll leave this place to you.”
She turned back to the white rat. “Where is the Queen Rat?”
“Master,” Little White said, bowing and scraping. “The Queen is just over there... The Queen can command the Soldier Rats...”
“Damn, I almost forgot about that. Lead the way, quick.”
Little White immediately turned and scampered off at top speed, with Rosie close behind.
Knight John and Anna remained behind.
The female mage stepped forward to inspect the calves' condition, while Knight John stood guard nearby to prevent any mishaps.
Guided by Little White, Rosie wound through several corridors deep within the prison before finally stopping in front of a stone door.
“Master, this way.”
Rosie pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The room was large, its floor carpeted with a layer of dry moss. Huddled in a corner was a rat about the size of a pig.
Its entire body was grayish-white, its skin loose and flabby, as if time had settled upon it in folds of sagging fat.
Upon seeing someone enter, it shrank back, baring its teeth in a menacing snarl. However, its round eyes were filled with sheer panic, creating a stark contrast with its bulky frame.
Rosie walked up, grabbed the loose scruff behind its neck, hoisted it up, and tossed it toward the doorway, adding a kick to its backside for good measure.
The Queen Rat let out a sharp squeak and curled into a tight ball. Completely devoid of any majestic aura, she looked exactly like a startled hamster.
Rosie commanded, “Take her to the main entrance and have her order the Soldier Rats to retreat.”
“Yes, Master.”
Little White ran over to the Queen Rat and unleashed a flurry of rapid squeaks.
The Queen Rat shrank her neck, letting out a series of squeaks before bowing her body low to Rosie in submission.
By the time Rosie returned to the hall with the submissive Queen Rat, the dwarf was leaning against a pillar.
His leather armor was torn in several places, bloody scratches lined his arms, and a gash on his chest was still seeping blood. His breathing was heavy and ragged.
The ground around him was littered with corpses, covered in the bodies of Soldier Rats.
A thick stench of blood hung heavy in the air.
In the outer perimeter, numerous Soldier Rats were still lunging forward in waves, their eyes bloodshot, fangs bared as they let out raspy growls.
One Soldier Rat leapt fiercely into the air, but with a swing of his axe, the dwarf lopped off its head mid-flight. As the headless corpse thudded to the ground, the dwarf raised his axe once more.
Just then, Rosie delivered a sharp kick to the Queen Rat's backside.
The Queen Rat squeaked in pain. Shaking all over, she stood up, opened her mouth, and unleashed a series of high-pitched, drawn-out squeals.
Upon hearing this sound, the Soldier Rats froze in unison.
Those poised to spring stopped in their tracks, then retreated one by one into the shadows.
Only after the Soldier Rats had completely vanished did the dwarf slump onto the ground, panting heavily.
“Are you alright?” Rosie walked over and asked.
“I'm not so pathetic that I'd get bitten to death by rats!” the dwarf retorted with a grin.
Rosie raised her hand. “Holy Light.”
Golden light enveloped the dwarf's body, and his crisscrossing wounds began to heal rapidly under its glow.
The dwarf looked down at himself. “That's much better. Thanks!”
However, he still didn't stand up. While Holy Light could heal wounds, it could not wash away his exhaustion.
“How is it inside?” he asked.
Rosie nodded. “All dealt with.”
“Ha! That's good.” The dwarf let out a sigh of relief, then sighed again. “A pity I didn't get to chop down any of those big bastards. What a waste.”
“Don't worry, you'll have your chance,” Rosie said. “The Mammothkin leader mentioned they migrated here, so there should be other Mammothkin out there.”
The dwarf's eyes lit up. “Now that's what I like to hear! Slaying giant bastards is one of the few pleasures a dwarf has!”
Rosie nodded, then began handling the aftermath.
Having subjugated the Queen Rat, she naturally became the new master of the rat swarm.
First, she summoned all the Servant Rats that were capable of speech.
Dozens of Servant Rats gathered before Rosie, eyeing her warily while letting out submissive squeaks from time to time, just as they had done with their former master.
Rosie began questioning them one by one for information.
From their accounts, she learned that the Mammothkin had settled here because there was a pool inside the building with an endless supply of water.
Afterward, Anna went to inspect it and, after careful observation, reached a conclusion.
At the bottom of the pool was a self-sustaining magic circle that continuously generated water. It was an incredibly precious ancient magic circle.
Unfortunately, once such a magic circle was established, it could not be moved without losing its effect.
Rosie did not dwell on the subject for long.
While searching the Mammothkin leader's room, she had found a map inside a metal chest.
The material of the map was unknown, but despite its age, the details remained as clear as new, without any signs of damage.
The map outlined the layout of the Underdark, marking out everything from the portal areas to the ruins.
What astonished Rosie the most was that the Underdark was far larger than she had imagined.
The ruins alone were divided into five regions—East, West, South, North, and Center—and their current location was merely the northern region.
And beyond the ruins lay an even vaster world.
Rosie was overjoyed. She rolled up the map and tucked it into her breast pocket.
Before leaving, she gave the rat swarm their final directives.
Clean up the battlefield, cultivate mushrooms, and regularly deliver food and water to the temporary camp.
Led by Little White, the Servant Rats squeaked in unison to show their understanding.
Afterward, the four of them, accompanied by Little White and the Queen Rat, led the five Mammothkin calves out of the prison building.
Once they left, a massive swarm of rats flooded in, swarming over the Mammothkin corpses in the hall.
The sound of gnawing echoed through the empty hall for a long time. The Mammothkin, who had once fed on the rats, had now become their food.
When they returned to the camp, everyone's eyes locked onto them.
Two large rats led the way, one white and the other grayish-white.
Five Mammothkin calves followed behind, each standing roughly as tall as a small pony.
Rosie, the dwarf, and Knight John were covered in blood, making it obvious they had just come from a fierce battle.
The camp fell silent for a brief moment.
Then, the crowd erupted into a frenzy of chatter.
“What massive rats!”
“What are those? Centaurs?”
Even the Baron, who came out upon hearing the commotion, had a look of utter astonishment on his face.
Knight John walked over to the Baron and briefly recounted what had happened in a low voice.
The Baron fell silent after listening.
He had sent Rosie to explore, and she had returned asking to cooperate.
He had agreed to the cooperation, only for Rosie to go and completely wipe out the enemy's stronghold.
She had even conscripted their servants and calves along the way.
However, upon seeing the Mammothkin calves, the Baron felt a surge of excitement.
Just as John had said, these Mammothkin calves possessed limitless potential.
Not only could they be domesticated into slave laborers, but they could also be raised into powerful war machines.
According to John, a regular knight was not necessarily a match for a single adult Mammothkin.
Rosie was an Honorary Dawnguard, a warrior capable of slaying vampires.
Anna was a powerful mage.
The Mammothkin might not be able to handle them, but against ordinary men, they would be an overwhelming, crushing force.
He glanced again at the two large rats crouching by Rosie's feet.
“The rat swarm will regularly deliver food and water,” Rosie spoke up.
“The Queen Rat can control the swarm to make them behave. Little White is very intelligent; we can teach it Common, so we'll be able to communicate in the future.”
The Baron looked at her with a complex gaze. “Miss Rosie, you are...?”
“I'm here to adventure, not to manage territory,” Rosie said. “I will leave these matters to you, Lord Baron.”
The Baron fell silent for a moment before speaking. “You aren't an official knight yet, are you?”
Rosie was taken aback. “No.”
“In that case, let me help you become an official knight.”
With those words, the Baron drew his sword.
“Please kneel on one knee, Miss Rosie.”
The people in the camp gathered around, eager to witness the spectacle.
Rosie hesitated for a moment, then removed her helmet and knelt on one knee.
The Baron tapped Rosie's left shoulder with his blade. “In the name of the lord, I bestow upon you fearless courage. May your heart be as iron, and your blade never break.”
He tapped her right shoulder. “In the name of the king, I bestow upon you a noble soul. May you hold beauty in your heart, and remain resolute and loyal.”
Finally, he tapped the crown of her head. “In the name of the Holy Light, I bestow upon you a just heart. May you discern good from evil, and protect the weak.”
The Baron lowered his sword. “Arise, Rosie of Norman, Knight of the Holy Light.”
A round of applause erupted from the crowd.
Only the dwarf muttered under his breath, “If Rosie can be a knight, then I should easily count as a paragon of knighthood.”
Anna whispered back, “Can you even mount a horse on your own?”
The dwarf fell silent instantly.
Rosie stood up, tucking her helmet under her arm, and gave a polite nod to the onlookers.
She truly looked every bit the model knight.
Then, a line of text appeared at the edge of her vision:
【Completed a knightly deed: Gained 10% advancement experience】
The Baron sheathed his sword, looking at her with a faint smile.
“Knight Rosie, by my authority as the Lord of Weismar, I grant you the title of Pioneer Knight. The Mammothkin territory you conquered shall become your fief, and the rat swarm shall be your subjects.”
“Uh, thank you, Lord Baron...”
Rosie was somewhat speechless. She had given up those assets precisely because she didn't want to get bogged down by them.
“While you are away adventuring, I will send men to help manage your fief,” the Baron added.
Rosie could only thank him once more.
Just as the Baron was about to say more, a soldier on guard duty outside the camp rushed in.
“Lord Baron! There is a group approaching from outside!”
His words cut short, the Baron immediately turned and walked out of the camp.
Rosie followed him.
Under the glow of the crystals, a troop was marching from the direction of the portal.
They marched in neat ranks, equipped with high-standard, uniform gear.
The banner at the front of the column unfurled as they marched.
The Baron's expression shifted drastically. “Count Morris! Why is he here?!”
